Halloween is supposed to be a fun and exciting night, so DoctorsCare has some tips to keep you and those around you safe, so it doesn’t turn into a scary (pun intended) time.
Children (and adults!) love Halloween because of the candy and costumes but did you know children are more than twice as likely to get hit and killed by a car on Halloween night than any other night of the year? Check out these simple safety tips below that can help you prevent a frightful night.
Costume safety
- Make sure all costumes, wigs, and accessories are fire-resistant.
- If children are walking around after dark, add reflective tape to their bag or costume and give them glow sticks or a flashlight to carry.
- Make sure any makeup you buy is non-toxic and try it on a small area of skin before applying it in case it causes skin irritation.
- Buy costumes that fit and aren’t too long that they can trip and fall over.
Trick-or-treating safety
- Adults should accompany young children.
- If you’re allowing your older children to go alone, plan and review a route beforehand.
- And teach your children to never go in a stranger’s house or car.
- Always walk on sidewalks or paths.
- If there aren’t any, walk facing traffic to the far left as possible.
- Look left, right, and left again when crossing the street.
- Always cross at street corners and use traffic signals and crosswalks.
- Teach children never to run out or attempt to cross between parked cars.
- Try to stay in well-lit areas.
- Put your cell phones down while walking to prevent distractions.
Safety tips for motorists
If you’re out driving on Halloween,
- Drive with caution during trick-or-treating hours.
- Slow down in residential neighborhoods.
- Enter and exit driveways carefully and slowly.
- Take extra time to look for children on roadways, medians, and curbs.
- And lastly, while this should be a no-brainer, do not use your phone while driving!
